Some of my patients complain of pain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide require a lot of rubbing in to prevent looking ghostly. As it turns out, this is the property that makes these products safe to use. They appear white because the particles in the zinc and titanium are too big for the skin to absorb.
In sunscreens, particle size matters, not just for sun protection but your overall health. When sunscreens go on white it means they contain micronized zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. When they come out clear the manufacturer has use nanoparticles that are many times smaller. Recent studies have shown that people whose sunscreens have nanoparticles have increased levels of zinc in their blood which is not the case for micronized particles. Remember white is the new tan…at least for the face!
